Background Check

New Background Check Procedure

The BOD of Chelmsford adopted new processes and procedures for doing background checks in compliance with the Federal Government Child Safety Act and Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken rules.  Background checks will now include Massachusetts CORI checks for all coaches, managers, BOD Members and other volunteers with regular direct and/or one on one contact with our youth players.  It will also require coaches and managers to complete and be certified that they passed Abuse Prevention Training.  All of these pieces will be done completely online at no cost to our volunteers for 2019.

The procedure is straight forward:  Go to chelmsfordyouthbaseball.org and click on CORI Application (or click here).  Fill out the form and click submit.  If you pass CORI, you will get an email within 2-3 days giving a link and instructions for the National Background Check.  Coaches and managers passing the National Background will be emailed a link to the Abuse Prevention Training.  It is a one hour video and a test which must be passed to get certification.

What we see nightly on our news from around the nation shows us all how necessary these checks and training have become in our world.  Fortunately, our program and the sport of baseball has an advantage of being group oriented.  Very few times is there an adult and a single, non-related child together and apart from the group.  Our parents, for the most part, are active participants and/or observers of our activities.  All these things are very important for the protection of our young players.

Babe Ruth Leagues Inc, of which we are a Chartered Program, has produced a report discussing and explaining many of the issues with which we are dealing.  That report is available HERE.

CORI Applications are now open!

Are you interested in having your son or daughter play baseball this spring?  There is still time to sign up for either the Learn to Play or Instructional leagues.  Both programs will teach your child the basic skills to play baseball, and also offer “schedule certainty” for your busy lives!

Learn to Play:  This division is designed for 4 year old children (as of April 30th) interested in learning to play baseball.

  • Players will meet once a week on Sunday for 90 minutes.
  • The focus will be on learning baseball fundamentals such as throwing, catching, fielding and hitting.
  • The season will run 8 weeks starting at the end of April at Roberts Field and ends with a “field day” in June at the Route 110 Fields.
  • Cost for registration is $75.  Registration can be completed on line at www.chelmsfordyouthbaseball.org.  Please contact Mike Cotta atmikecotta11@yahoo.com with questions about “Learn to Play”.

Instructional Divison: Formerly called our “tee ball division”, Instructional league is for players who are 5 years of age. This league is geared toward building an understanding of the fundamentals of baseball including proper batting, throwing, and fielding techniques. We use a clinic based training structure which offers multiple exposures to techniques while keeping the players engaged.

  • Players will meet twice a week – one weekday and once on Saturdays
  • Schedule certainty – each team will meet on the same weekday, and during one of three time slots on Saturday.  We will also make a best effort to minimize conflicts with other sport schedules.
  • We use our best efforts to accommodate requests for players who need to play with other children for transportation purposes.
  • Cost to play is $90.  Registration can be completed on line at www.chelmsfordyouthbaseball.org
  • Please contact Jon Stagnone at jon.stagnone@verizon.net with questions about “Instructional Division”.
